One Thing I Ate: Vanilla & sea salt Shakerato š§
Seeking an iced coffee recipe for Spring? I gotchu.
Hello and welcome back to Five Things I Ate! This week, I share a beverage recipe for your Little Treat needs. Read past posts here, and please follow my Instagram, @fivethingsiate.Ā Ā
Long time readers (or actually short time readers also) of this āletter know the chokehold that $8 iced coffee, the shakerato, has got on me. I first had it at Penn Station, in the new overpriced renovated part, and since then I have been on an endless quest to recreate it at home because that is simply way too much money to drop on coffee. My gold standard as of now is the oat-milk concoction I had last week at Ceremony Coffee in Baltimore.
Ok, so this was not the shakerato recipe I was looking for ... but it is a very delicious beverage. Actually, itās so good it might be my default warm-day drink for this Spring. It is inspired by Vietnamese iced coffee, but tastes quite different due to the shaking and use of espresso. Thereās only one tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk, but it tastes quite creamy due to the froth. Anyways, the quest continues!
[Things I need: A manicure & a better home food photography setup, in that order. Pls send recs for both š]
Vanilla & sea salt ShakeratoĀ
Serves one.
Inspired by Bon Appetit, but you really donāt need the extra syrup.
2 shots nespresso (light roast) or espresso ā slightly cooled
1 tbs sweetened condensed milk
dash of vanilla
sprinkle of sea salt
Stir sweetened condensed milk into espresso until melted. Add dash of vanilla.
Pour mixture into a cocktail shaker (I just used a Nalgene bottle) filled with ice.
Shake vigorously, at least 30 seconds. You want the outside to become cold and mixture to be frothy.
Fill a tall glass with ice. Strain coffee over ice in glass. I used a slotted spoon, which I donāt recommend. Let some small ice chips and foam fall through. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve with a cold metal straw.
XOXO,
Soph
