One Thing I Ate: Sirloin steak with garlic baby broccoli 🥩🥦
Baby’s first time making steak 🥺
Hello and welcome back to Five Things I Ate! This week, I make my very first steak! Read past posts here, and please follow my Instagram, @fivethingsiate.
So I know this newsletter is called FIVE things I ate, but if i’m being brutally honest with you (and I always try to be because you are important to me!), it’s been a little stressful as of late for me to conjure up five sharable meals with you on a weekly basis. The truth is, a lot of my meals are frozen TJ’s pizza, and as much as I am a simp for Trader Joe’s, that’s not the kind of primo content I wanna put out into the world. However, instead of feeling overwhelmed and either avoiding or deciding to quit this newsletter altogether, I’ve decided to try sharing a weekly meal or snack with you instead. I think this could be fun for us for two reasons: 1) I’d like to share and develop more recipes, and 2) if you’re looking for something to cook, this simplifies things too. Anyways, this week I made my first steak at home! So maybe you wanna make a steak too? And you can eat it virtually together with me <3
Sirloin steak with garlic baby broccoli 🥩🥦
Believe it or not this is the first time I’ve ever made a steak for myself in my life! I love steak but I’ve ever only had it for special occasions at a restaurant and it occurred to me only recently that I could buy some at the grocery store for a weeknight. So this is definitely not as good as Fancy Steak, but it’s also pretty Fancy for a weeknight dinner or date night which I think is not bad. I really got a photogenic sear going on that steak, hence I’m sharing a photo. Also, I loooove the baby broccoli so much, it soaks up all the steak flavor, I actually think I liked it even more than the steak itself.
Ingredients:
2 sirloin steaks (8oz each from Trader Joe’s)
1 bunch (8 oz ) of baby broccoli or broccolini
1 tbs salted butter
2 cloves garlic
Supplies:
Heavy stainless steel pan with lid. My pan is the Cuisinart MCP33-24HN MultiClad Pro Stainless 3-1/2-Quart Saute with Helper and Cover Skillet, 3.5-Quart, which is a dupe of a more expensive All-Clad pan. I love me a budget-friendly dupe and I’m very happy with this pan so far, which is sub-$100, and in fact just about 60 bucks on sale right now at Bed Bath and Beyond, which I thought went out of business??
Steps:
Turn heat to high and let pan get very hot.
Meanwhile, season steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
When pan is very hot, lower steak into pan. It should sizzle. Do not turn down heat and do not cover.
Set timer for 5 minutes, do not bother steak.
Meanwhile, trim the ends of baby broccoli and thinly slice 2 cloves garlic.
When 5 min goes off, flip, and set another timer for 5 min.
Do not bother steak.
When timer goes off, remove steak to a plate and let stand.
Add 1 tbs butter, 2 cloves thinly sliced garlic to pan. Swirl to melt.
Add baby broccoli, season liberally with salt and pepper, and cover pan.
Set timer for 5-8 min. Midway, add a splash of water to pan, so it doesn’t burn, and cover to steam.
Baby broccoli is done with stalks are tender.
Serve with steak.
XOXO,
Soph
P.S. If you love this newsletter, please share it with a friend! <3Â
I'm surprised that I am saying this, but the broccoli looks even tastier than the steak 🤔
This looks so good!
Just clarifying: no butter or oil in the pan to start?
