Hello and welcome back to Five Things I Ate! This week, we introduce One Thing I Ate. Check out past posts here, and please follow my Instagram @fivethingsiate.
Five Things I Ate is officially two years old two days from today (say that five times as fast!), and like all inquisitive toddlers it is about to throw something new and creative your way.
What started off as a coffee break suggestion from a friend has morphed into a part-time writing project with nearly 900 subscribers, and I’m deeply grateful for each and every one of you. I never expected to keep writing — and for you to keep reading — for so long.Â
The truth is, there were many times this year, drowning under the weight of the pandemic, and a very busy day job, that I thought about letting this newsletter go. Five Things I Ate is a labor of love, but it takes up the time and energy of a part-time job.
That’s why, in the new year, I’m giving you an option to support me.
For the cost of $5 or one fancy latte a month, each month, I’ll send you One Thing I Ate: A special, longform, family recipe, like Mama’s Scallion Pancakes, with photos and illustrations. Â
If you’re feeling particularly generous — you can become a Very Good Eater.
For your extra donations, I’ll send you special content — like illustrations and city food maps — and be deeply grateful.
Either way, you’ll continue to get the regular Five Things I Ate three times a month, because I understand that times are tough.
In the spirit of the holidays, you can also gift a friend a paid subscription:
Here’s what your money will go towards:
Proving that white dude journalists who hate being edited aren’t the only ones who can profit off of Substack. Â
Also, a subtle f— you to the guy who once told me that I should post more pictures of myself in order to market my food writing. Jokes on you because there are no photos at all!!!
My grumpy cat’s very expensive medical bills.
My own very expensive medical bills.
Grocery and food costs to produce recipes.
And finally, most important of all — ensuring that Five Things I Ate will continue to live on.Â
Happy New Year,
Soph
P.S. We will be back to our regularly scheduled Pie Content next week. 🥧
