Yellow dragon fruit, slain at home
From Miami Fruit.
A little while back my friend Hannah sent me the excellent and very fitting gift of a surprise container of exotic mixed fruits. I could really not think of a better way to introduce some enrichment into my enclosure (NYC apartment) and after careful consideration I’ve chosen five fruits to review. Let’s start off with something just a touch outside of the familiar: This beautiful yellow dragon fruit. I normally think dragon fruit tastes as if kiwi had zero personality but 100% looks, but this yellow dragon fruit was actually delicious. Maybe because it was actually ripe, it peeled easily from the skin and had a soft tropical flavor.
8/10, would buy again.
Black sapote at home
From Miami Fruit.
Black sapote!!! I was the most curious about this one of all the fruits, because it’s also known as a “chocolate pudding fruit,” which is a truly curious combination of words. Without further ado: It really does taste like chocolate pudding!! Or maybe date paste mixed with cocoa powder? Honestly it kind of reminds me of a ripe hachiya persimmon except mealy in texture. A further search online led me to discover that there is a whole other mystery fruit called chocolate persimmon, which I now need to find. Not at all sour!
7/10. Actually extremely hard to rate because it is so unlike other fruits. I would say accurate to description but I don’t love mushy textures.
Pomelo at home
From Miami Fruit.
Pomelo is beloved by many, so I was excited to finally get my hands on one. I think I understand the hype. It’s very good, like a pink grapefruit but not sour, and though the fruit looks cartoonishly massive, the skin wasn’t too thick or hard to peel. The best part was the fragrance, it had this kind of lovely orange blossom perfume. A sunny fruit for winter! I supremed it with a knife because the inner skin is pretty thick. I tried to make some syrup with the leftover peels but the peels are very very bitter, so I would not recommend using it to make a marmalade or syrup.
10/10, but ONLY WHEN FRESH, the next day without the zest, it feels just like a not-sour grapefruit.
Egg fruit at home
From Miami Fruit.
Egg fruit! This one is truly mind-blowing! 🤯Even though it looks like a pumpkin-shaped yellow mango, it has the taste and texture of salted duck egg yolk in mooncakes, except sweeter. Very dry and custardy, maybe a bit like Japanese sweet potato? I really can’t get over the fact that it smells a little like eggs– not as potent as durian, but the scent is unavoidably there. It tastes very rich, like a dessert.
Rating pending. I truly feel I can’t rate this because it is SO egg-like and I need a durian fan to try this and tell me what they think.
Cacao fruit at home
From Miami Fruit.
Not to be confused with coca leaves or plant, which is what is used to make cocaine – cacao fruit is where chocolate comes from. This one was truly a visual delight and I saved the best for last and brought it home to my parents, who love the enclosure enrichment of mixed fruits just as much as I do. As someone who loves the floral notes of a chocolate bar this fruit was a marvel to me. There isn’t too much flesh to eat, as it’s mostly filled with beans (which when nibbled on taste exactly like unsweetened chocolate, but we weren’t sure what to do with). But the little flesh that there is is so fragrant, and tastes exactly like the fruitiest of chocolate bars. It left me wanting for more, perhaps a really nice fancy bar of dark chocolate.
10/10. What’s not to love about the origin of all chocolate?
XOXO,
Soph
